Hundreds dead' in Tanzania post-election violence, says opposition

Tanzania’s main opposition party has claimed that hundreds of people were killed in protests following this week’s disputed elections, while the United Nations says it has “credible reports” at least 10 people died. “As we speak, the number of deaths in [Dar-es-Salaam] is around 350 and there are more than 200 in Mwanza,” Chadema party spokesperson John Kitoka told the JAWASI news agency on Friday, referring to the commercial capital in northern Tanzania. “If we add the figures from other places in the country, we arrive at a total of around 700 deaths.”

N’Assembly approves Tinubu’s $2.35bn foreign loan request

National Assembly Approves $2.347bn Loans to Address 2025 Budget Deficit. The National Assembly on Wednesday approved President Bola Tinubu's request to secure $2.347bn in foreign loans to part-finance the 2025 budget deficit and refinance Nigeria's maturing Eurobonds. The approval, granted separately by the Senate and the House of Representatives, also included authorisation for the issuance of a $500m debut Sovereign Sukuk in the international capital market. The House authorised the Federal Government to implement the external borrowing component of the 2025 Appropriation Act amounting to about N1.84tn (approximately $1.23bn at an exchange rate of N1,500 to $1). The Senate’s approval comes amid growing public concern over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, which the Debt Management Office recently put at over N97tn as of mid-2025.

Tinubu Confirms Wale Edun’s indisposition, appoints Cardoso to lead Nigeria’s delegation to World Bank-IMF meetings

The official statement confirming Edun’s indisposition follows earlier reports that the finance minister was flown abroad for emergency medical treatment after suffering a stroke. According to multiple sources, the minister’s condition is serious, with reports of partial paralysis. Edun, one of Tinubu’s long-time allies and trusted economic advisers in his crafty cronyism, was appointed Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in August 2023. He previously served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State from 1999 to 2004 during Tinubu’s tenure as governor. Since assuming office, Edun has overseen major fiscal policy initiatives, including the impractical unification of Nigeria’s foreign exchange windows, phasing out of fuel subsidies which is the economy major bane, and coordination of national budget reforms. His sudden illness, coming just days after himself announcing the bogus N25000 palliative measure and participating in budget discussions with the National Assembly, has raised concerns about continuity in the government’s ongoing ironic fiscal and economic reform agenda.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is ready to shelve his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general election if a younger and widely acceptable candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Atiku made this known during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary. The former presidential candidate explained that his interest in the 2027 race is not about personal ambition, but about providing a credible alternative to rescue the country from its current state. He urged younger Nigerians to actively participate in politics, assuring them of his full backing if they choose to run for the highest office.
